Roadmapping

The goal of a good product roadmap is to communicate both the why and the what of the thing you are building in the context of each team's goals.  For both, it is critical that each roadmap item is expressed in a way that is relevant to the reader.   This is why I help companies create 4 types of roadmaps, using the language and terminology that each team finds most useful and valuable:

  1. Executive Roadmaps focus on communicating feature prioritizations in the context of higher-level strategic initiates such as market penetration, customer satisfaction, or usage growth. 

  2. Engineering Roadmaps are often aligned with the company's agile cadence.  These roadmaps communicate features, releases, sprints and milestones in the context of product goals and themes.  If not methodically managed, these roadmaps often devolve into a loosely prioritized list of technical jargon that diminishes their true usefulness.

  3. Internal Sales Roadmaps clearly convey feature implementation plans in the context of the benefits they provide, but expressed in a way that can be used in conversation with prospects without divulging confidential details.

  4. External Roadmaps are visually attractive documents designed to create excitement about your product pipeline amongst your existing customer base.
